Inspired by the strong witness of her daily, Mass-going parents, Sister felt a calling to religious life as a young child. Also, moved by the holy lives of Saint Mother Teresa, and her spiritual mentors, Sister Philip Marie Burle, and Sister Licia, P.O.S.C., young Dede joyfully rendered her fiat and entered the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts as Sister Deirdre of the Most Blessed Sacrament--a name inspired by Sr. Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament and the Little Workers' founder, Monsignor Francesco Greco, who once stated, "It was before the most blessed Sacrament that I found the love of Jesus and the power of that love".

Young Dede entered medical school on an army scholarship & saw several war fronts. She served in the Sinai Peninsula, Korea, and Haiti (for Operation Unified Response). She provided medical care at the base of the World Trade Center on 9/11, was deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom, provided trauma care for our wounded soldiers, and facilitated the rescue of citizens in hiding from the Taliban. Her witness to the love of Christ and her "call to be a fifth gospel" opened the hearts for the conversions of countless soldiers and citizens. After 29 years of serving her beloved country, Sister Dede retired from the army with the rank of colonel (06).

Inspired by the faithful example of her saintly father, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon in the D.C. area, Sister attended Georgetown Medical School and was double board certified as a surgeon and family medicine physician. She briefly served as Mother Teresa's physician, ministers worldwide as a missionary surgeon, and travels regularly to the war-torn Nuba Mountains in Sudan to provide lifesaving medical care to inhabitants under siege. While Sister professed the customary formal religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, she also took a fourth personal vow of providing free and loving medical care to the poor and uninsured throughout the world.
